Fixed Braces

Fixed braces are traditional orthodontic treatments. They consist of brackets and metal wire – the brackets are stuck to each tooth and the metal wire runs along your teeth.

Every six weeks or so, the wires are tightened, which makes the teeth become a little straighter. Like with Invisalign, it’s a gradual process. When your braces are removed, your teeth will be noticeably straighter!

Fixed braces are popular with teenagers and younger adults, but they are also a fantastic tool for adults of all ages who want perfectly straight teeth! With fixed braces, you can let the orthodontist do all the work – you just need to turn up to your appointments to get them tightened, and you’ll have perfectly straight teeth once they are removed!

Do fixed braces hurt?

It’s normal to feel some discomfort with fixed braces every time they are adjusted. This is because the braces apply force to the teeth to move them into a new position. The discomfort usually only lasts for a few days and can be easily managed with normal painkillers that you’d use for a headache. Sometimes fixed braces can rub on the cheeks or lips but you’ll be given wax to help prevent this.

Do I have to change what I eat with fixed braces?

You should be able to eat as normal with fixed braces, but we do recommend that you avoid eating and drinking certain things to reduce the risk of damaging the braces or staining the teeth. This includes things like sugared chewing gum, boiled sweets, toffees and fizzy drinks. We’ll give you comprehensive advice on how best to take care of your teeth when you have fixed braces fitted.

How long do fixed brace treatments take?

You can expect to wear the braces for between one and two years depending on how severe your case is. Once you’ve achieved your dream smile, you’ll need to wear a retainer every night to maintain the results and prevent the teeth from moving back.

How much do fixed braces cost?

Fixed braces cost between £2250 and £4000 depending on the type of braces you choose and whether just one or both arches are treated. Metal braces are more affordable than white braces, but the white ones are less visible than metal.
